Northwestern Now recently interviewed Dr. Losh and Dr. Lau, the lab’s post-doctoral fellow, on their recently published study, ‘Cross-linguistic patterns of speech prosodic differences in autism: A machine learning study’. In this study, machine learning was used to identify speech patterns in children with autism that were consistent between English and Cantonese. The results suggest that certain features of speech, specifically rhythm, could be useful for diagnosing autism. Dr. Losh and Dr. Lau spoke on targets for intervention, the benefits of research incorporating languages other than English, and potential future directions for their work and the use of artificial intelligence.
