What is the study about?
The Neurodevelopmental Diversity Laboratory at Northwestern University is recruiting participants for a study of patterns of language and social skills among people with autism and their families, as well as developmental similarities among family members.
What is autism/fragile X?
Autism is a developmental disability characterized by difficulties with communication and social functioning, as well as restricted and repetitive behaviors or interests. Fragile X syndrome is the most common known genetic cause of autism. Today, 1 in 59 American children is diagnosed with autism.
Who will be the participants in the study?
We’re searching for individuals with autism or fragile X syndrome and their parents, as well as individuals without autism and their parents. We’re especially interested in Iowa families, because we work with the University of Iowa to access [with permission] individuals’
standardized test scores.
What will participants do for the study?
It depends on how involved you want to be in the study. Participation can consist of simply answering some online questionnaires. As a full participant, you will: do some tasks involving words, sentences, pictures, and sounds; do puzzles; solve problems; complete some brain-activity measurements; and give a blood sample.
How much time does the study take?
Again, it depends on your level of participation. Answering questionnaires takes 30-60 minutes; full participation takes 2-6 hours, in either 1 or 2 visits, with frequent breaks.
Where and when does the study happen?
Our lab is based in Evanston, IL. We can conduct our research activities in our lab space and/or through remote testing sessions online via Zoom. We also regularly travel to Iowa to work with families. We can do the study wherever you’re comfortable – our lab, your home, or a neutral public place like a school. We’ll schedule your participation at convenient times for you and your family.
Will I be compensated for my participation?
Yes! All participants are compensated for their time, as well as for travel and parking.
